Marie Curie Chair in Palliative and End of Life Care, University College London, years 6-10

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

A senior palliative care researcher has been given a decade of flexible funding to build a world-class research programme, with no fixed project plan—just a mandate to lead and respond to emerging needs. This matters because palliative and end-of-life care is under-researched compared to curative medicine, and many patient groups are routinely excluded from studies. The grant funds a Chair at University College London who directs a department investigating how to improve care for people with dementia, the homeless, and patients with advanced liver disease—groups whose voices are seldom heard in research. The team also studies practical clinical questions around prognostication, sedation, and symptom control. Because the award was tied to a person rather than a specific project, the post holder could adapt priorities as the research landscape shifted. This flexibility has been the key to the department’s success. The impact is a sustained, responsive research programme that generates evidence for how to care for people at the end of life, including those currently underserved by existing services. No immediate clinical breakthrough is promised, but the work builds the knowledge base that future guidelines and training will rely on.

This grant was awarded to UCL in order to establish a Chair in Palliative and End-of- life care, and to lead the Marie Curie Palliative Care Research Department. Prof Paddy Stone was appointed to this post in April 2014. The grant was awarded for 1O years and successfully passed a planned interim review after 5 years. The grant was not awarded to undertake a specific plan of work. According to the job description, the post holder is responsible for, "Leading a world-class programme of research and providing leadership in research and teaching in Palliative and End of Life Care in MCPCRD, the Faculty of Brain Sciences and across UCL". No specific milestones or objectives were set for this post. This was because the award was given to a person rather than to a specific project. The flexibility and freedom to respond to the changing research environment that this has afforded has been the key to the success of the post. Prof Stone leads a department which undertakes research into “End of life care” (including studies on prognostication, sedation and symptom control) and palliative care in “seldom-heard” groups (including the palliative care needs of people with dementia, the homeless and patients with advanced liver disease).
