Privacy

UK Research Grants is a static website. There are no accounts, no sign-ins, and no advertising. This page explains, in plain English, what happens to data when you use it.

What we collect

We use Netlify Web Analytics to understand whether the site is being used and which pages are useful. Netlify produces these figures from its content-delivery server logs, without adding client-side analytics code. We see aggregate page-view, visitor, location and referrer reports; we do not use them to identify individual visitors.

We also use Netlify Real User Monitoring to find slow or unstable pages. When this is enabled, Netlify adds a small asynchronous script to production pages and collects aggregate Web Vitals such as loading speed, responsiveness and layout stability. Netlify states that this monitoring does not require cookies. We do not operate a separate performance tracker that attaches grant IDs, search text, form values or persistent visitor identifiers to performance events.

The site sets no analytics cookies, carries no advertising and does not follow you across other websites. Downloading a file necessarily requests it from Netlify, so that request can appear in the host's normal server logs; we do not add separate download tracking.

What stays in your browser

The site saves a few preferences in your browser's local storage: your light or dark theme choice, and whether you have dismissed a couple of one-time hints in the Semantic Map view. These stay on your device and never leave it. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes them.

Search terms and requests

Keyword matching runs against a downloaded catalogue inside your browser and does not call a search API. Search terms and filters are nevertheless kept in the page address so that a result can be bookmarked or shared. A term in that address can be sent to Netlify as part of the normal page request when you load or reload it, or when someone opens a shared search link, and can then appear in the host's server logs. Do not put confidential or sensitive information in a search.

Semantic search is different. When you run it, the text of your query is sent in the body of a private, non-cacheable request to our Netlify search function. The function sends the query to OpenAI to interpret it and rank matching grants. The function response does not repeat your query, but the shareable page-address point above still applies.

Map pages load their background map images from OpenStreetMap — a standard web request, the same as loading any image. The site itself is hosted on Netlify, which serves these pages the way any web host does.

People named in grant records

The grant records come from open data published by the funders themselves and can include the names of researchers who hold publicly funded grants. We republish this information for one purpose: making public research easier to find and understand. Every grant page links back to the original funder's record where one exists.
