A UK Yorkshire-led randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-centre trial of the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), in patients undergoing liver resection surgery, with curative intent, for colorectal cancer liver metastases. Primary endpoint is progression-free survival. Key secondary endpoints include overall survival, quality of life and cost-effectiveness. We will randomise (1:1) 447 patients to 5 x 574 mg capsules of 90% EPA-triglyceride (or placebo) daily, starting prior to surgery and continuing for a minimum of two-years. The trial is powered to detect a clinically meaningful 30% improvement in progression-free survival, likely to drive introduction of EPA therapy into routine oncology practice.
