Our study will involve participants with injuries to their knee. We want to understand links between the immune system, pain, the distress patients go through and how the knee works after the injury. Injuries will include those to the bones around the knee. We will take samples from study participants. These will include blood and knee fluid samples within the first 8 days of injury and/or surgery. Two stool (poo) samples will be taken, one just before they leave hospital and one at 6 months follow up. Samples taken will give us insights into the immune systems response to the knee injury (inflammation). This will be followed by questionnaires, examinations of the knee and pain testing for up to 12 months after the injury. This will improve our knowledge about the relationship between knee injury, surgery, psychological distress, pain and inflammation which will help in advancing treatment options for people with knee injuries.
