The purpose of our study is to better understand fetal, neonatal and infant brain development. We use MRI to safely scan the fetal, neonatal and infant brain on at least one occasion. Where possible, we would like to follow your child’s development for 3-4 years. We would like to look at the genes, hormones and chemicals which together regulate brain development. These include the molecules which respond to infection (and infections are very common in pregnancy) and hormones such as Vitamin D. We are also interested in babies who have a close family member with conditions like Autism Spectrum Disorders and/or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD). Since COVID-19 arrived in the U.K. in 2020, we have been given ethical approval to include testing for this infection in the mothers and children participating in our study. This may give us an opportunity to better understand how mother and baby respond to infections. We particularly welcome mothers who have had a positive COVID 19 test during their pregnancy to join our study.
