Are Artificial Intelligence enabled diagnostic tools for mental health widening health inequalities for people with multiple long term conditions: A mixed methods study from the Methodologies Workstream

Complex methodological challenges impede progress in mental illness diagnosis and physical multiple long term condition (MLTC) research including the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools. Several AI tools are piloted or already in use within the NHS to aid diagnosis of mental health conditions, but it is unclear if these widen or narrow health inequalities in relation to age, sex, ethnicity, socioeconomic deprivation, or physical and mental/cognitive disabilities. The aim of this project is to conduct a collaborative mixed methods project examining if current NHS diagnostic AI tools for mental illnesses are widening health inequalities in MLTC.
