The National Health Service (NHS) in England has committed to achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2045. NHS England is responsible for approximately 4% of national carbon emissions, with Scope 3 emissions, that is these arising from the procurement and use of goods and services, constituting approximately 75% of total NHS emissions. Within this category, purchase and procurement related to pharmaceuticals, medicines, and medical equipment account for approximately 30%. We will systematically search the existing literature to find studies that have reported (i) the proportion of healthcare Scope 3 emissions attributable to medicines and medical equipment; (ii) what interventions have been proposed or implemented by healthcare providers to reduce Scope 3 emissions associated with these products; and (iii) what is known about the effectiveness of such interventions. We also want to know the costs of these interventions The knowledge generated by this review will inform policy and support effective implementation of the NHS net zero strategy.
