Viable Implementation of SATRE, SACRO and Tools for AI (VISTA)

A single standard for secure data environments is being rolled out across the UK, along with a toolkit to automate the checking of research outputs before they leave those environments. This matters because patient data held in Trusted Research Environments (TREs) is currently locked behind inconsistent security rules and manual approval processes. Each TRE has its own architecture, making it difficult to share data or run analyses across multiple sites. The manual checking of results—to ensure no patient can be re-identified—is slow and labour-intensive, creating a bottleneck that delays research. If VISTA succeeds, the SATRE standard will become the common blueprint for all NHS and university TREs, allowing researchers to move between them without renegotiating access. The SACRO toolkit will automate output checks, cutting review times from days to minutes. This could accelerate studies that rely on linked health data—such as tracking disease outbreaks, evaluating treatments, or modelling the health impacts of climate change—without compromising patient privacy. The project is focused on implementation and scale, not discovery, but its success would quietly improve the infrastructure that keeps health data research running.
