Most adult chronic diseases such as diabetes,mental health conditions,and cardiovascular disease are likely to have their origins in childhood,yet children and young people are a historically underrepresented group in health research. This means that whilst we know that the aetiology and progression of such conditions result from a complex interplay of biological,psychological and environmental factors,precise disease mechanisms are still poorly understood. This has limited the development of effective personalised interventions. The lifetime impact of rare genetic disease is significant: many present as life threatening illness in children,requiring rapid,targeted intervention,others present with long-term chronic illnesses,often misdiagnosed. Related mental health problems and learning disabilities are also often not identified or are poorly managed. These limitations lead to poor outcomes spanning health,psychological,education,and social domains,impacting individuals not only in childhood,but across the life course. D-CYPHR aims to improve the inclusion of children and young people in health research by recruiting children aged 0-15 in the United Kingdom (UK),both with and without known health conditions. The inclusion of children from the general population will allow analysis of data on conditions such as obesity,asthma,and mental health problems,and understanding the genetic links to childhood diseases,where identification of comparative cohorts will be invaluable. 45% of the 2,500 children recruited so far have a self declared physical health problem and 28% have a self-reported mental health condition. D-CYPHR will explore recruitment through multiple channels such as NHS settings,community settings,schools,and social media,with a specific focus on improving the representation of families from underserved groups. The aim will be to develop a resource that allows for scientifically robust research into childhood health and improve our understanding of how conditions such as diabetes,mental health conditions,and cardiovascular disease occur.
