Lumi SLR: Revolutionising space sustainability through precise and scalable Satellite Laser Ranging

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

Every day, satellite operators receive hundreds of thousands of collision warnings, but 99.9% of them are false alarms caused by imprecise tracking data. This matters because the number of satellites in Low Earth Orbit is growing exponentially, driven by commercial opportunities. Current tracking systems are too inaccurate to manage space traffic effectively. Operators ignore the vast majority of warnings, leading to catastrophic collisions that create more debris and threaten critical infrastructure such as communications, navigation, and Earth observation. Lumi Space’s satellite laser ranging platform tracks objects in LEO with 1,000 times greater accuracy than existing solutions. If successful, the platform will allow operators to act decisively on collision avoidance, slashing operational and insurance costs. It could also unlock new markets in active debris removal and satellite servicing—proximity operations that are impossible with today’s imprecise data. The result is a safer, more sustainable orbital environment for the infrastructure that modern society depends on.

Commercial opportunities in space are driving an exponential increase in the number of satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). Overcrowded orbits, space debris, and inadequate data increase the likelihood of collisions, threatening infrastructure and limiting the potential of the space industry. Space traffic management has become impossible with current satellite/object tracking solutions. Satellite operators receive hundreds of thousands of collision warnings at huge cost every day, with a 99.9% false positive rate due to imprecise data. The vast majority of warnings are ignored, resulting in catastrophic collisions and more debris. Lumi Space’s revolutionary satellite laser ranging (SLR) platform tracks objects in LEO with 1,000x greater accuracy than current solutions. The platform will enable satellite operators to act decisively on collision avoidance, reduce operational/insurance costs, and create new markets in active debris removal & satellite servicing/proximity operations.
