Doctoral Training Grant

This grant funds the training of the next generation of bioscience researchers across the UK. The BBSRC’s Doctoral Training Partnerships provide the structured postgraduate education that produces skilled scientists. Without this funding, there would be no pipeline of trained researchers to staff university labs, industrial R&D departments, or government agencies. The problem it addresses is a straightforward one of workforce supply: fundamental and applied bioscience cannot advance without people who know how to do it. The impact is indirect but pervasive. Every trained PhD graduate from these programmes will go on to work on something—whether that is developing new crop varieties, improving fermentation processes for food and drink, designing better enzymes for industrial manufacturing, or understanding the molecular basis of disease. The grant does not specify which discoveries will emerge; it ensures the conditions for discovery exist. This is primarily a capacity-building investment rather than a specific research project. It is the equivalent of maintaining the laboratory, not running a single experiment. The tangible outcome is a cohort of scientists who, over the following decades, will generate the knowledge and innovations that keep the UK’s bioscience sector functioning.
