Oxford is opening a doctoral training centre that will teach scientists to build computer models of how proteins, cells, and whole organisms behave as integrated systems. This matters because biology has traditionally split into two camps: experimentalists who gather data, and theorists who build models. The gap between them means that even when we know what individual molecules do, we often cannot predict how they will behave together inside a living cell. The centre aims to train a generation of researchers who can work across that divide, using systems biology to connect molecular details to whole-organism function. The research is fundamental science. It will not produce a new drug or device next year. But similar cross-disciplinary training programmes in the past have led to breakthroughs in metabolic engineering, synthetic biology, and personalised medicine. By embedding systems thinking into how biologists are trained, this centre could eventually change how we design crops, manufacture chemicals, or understand diseases—by treating cells not as bags of molecules, but as integrated systems whose behaviour can be modelled, predicted, and ultimately controlled.
