The UK Research Councils are funding a network of doctoral training partnerships that will produce the next generation of scientists and engineers. This grant supports the University of Surrey's share of that network. Without sustained investment in postgraduate training, the country risks losing expertise in fields that underpin everything from drug discovery to artificial intelligence. Past investments in doctoral training have produced researchers who developed MRI scanners, fibre-optic communications, and lithium-ion batteries—none of which existed when those students began their PhDs.
