The University of Edinburgh is using EPSRC funding to train the next generation of doctoral researchers through a Doctoral Training Partnership. This matters because the UK needs a steady pipeline of highly skilled scientists and engineers to drive innovation in everything from quantum computing to sustainable manufacturing. Without sustained investment in postgraduate training, the country risks losing its competitive edge in research and development. The DTA model provides flexible, high-quality doctoral education across a range of disciplines, allowing students to develop deep technical expertise alongside transferable skills. If this succeeds, it will produce PhD graduates who go on to work in academia, industry, and the public sector—people who design better batteries, improve medical imaging algorithms, develop more efficient aircraft engines, or strengthen cybersecurity systems. These are the kinds of quiet, infrastructure-level improvements that keep the UK's research base healthy and its economy competitive. This is primarily a training grant rather than a specific research project. It does not target a single problem or application. Instead, it funds the people who will solve tomorrow's problems, whatever those turn out to be.
