The University of Glasgow is receiving EPSRC funding to train the next generation of doctoral researchers through a Doctoral Training Partnership. This grant addresses a fundamental gap in the UK’s research pipeline: how to produce skilled scientists and engineers capable of tackling complex, interdisciplinary challenges. Without sustained investment in postgraduate training, the country risks losing its capacity for innovation in fields that underpin modern life—from energy systems and manufacturing to digital infrastructure and healthcare technologies. If successful, this partnership will produce PhD graduates equipped with both deep technical expertise and transferable skills. These researchers will go on to work in academia, industry, and the public sector, directly contributing to advances that people rarely think about: more efficient power grids, stronger materials for construction, faster data networks, and improved medical diagnostics. The training itself is the primary output—there is no single product or discovery to point to, but the long-term impact flows from the people it produces. This is fundamentally a capacity-building investment. It does not target a specific technological breakthrough, but without such training programmes, the breakthroughs that do happen would have no one to make them.
