The UK Research Councils are funding a network of Doctoral Training Partnerships that will train the next generation of scientists and engineers through postgraduate research degrees. This matters because the UK needs a steady pipeline of skilled researchers to maintain its position in science and technology. Without sustained investment in doctoral training, the country risks falling behind in critical fields such as advanced manufacturing, clean energy, artificial intelligence, and healthcare technologies. The partnerships bring together universities and sometimes consortia of research organisations to provide structured training environments. If these partnerships succeed, they will produce hundreds of PhD graduates equipped to tackle complex problems across industry, academia, and government. The impact is indirect but fundamental: these researchers will go on to develop new materials, improve medical diagnostics, design more efficient energy systems, and strengthen digital infrastructure. The training model itself may also become more efficient, with shared resources and expertise across institutions.
