The UK Research Councils are funding a network of Doctoral Training Partnerships that will train the next generation of scientists and engineers through postgraduate studentships. This matters because the UK needs a steady pipeline of skilled researchers to maintain its position in science and technology. Without structured training programmes, early-career researchers lack the support, resources, and collaborative environment needed to develop expertise. The partnerships address this gap by providing coordinated funding and training across universities or consortia of research organisations. If this succeeds, the UK will have a workforce equipped to tackle complex challenges in areas such as clean energy, healthcare, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing. The impact is indirect but fundamental: every breakthrough in these fields depends on people who were trained somewhere. These partnerships are that somewhere. This is primarily a training and capacity-building initiative rather than a specific research project. It does not target a single problem or application. Instead, it creates the conditions under which future discoveries happen—much as previous doctoral training schemes produced the researchers who later developed mRNA vaccines, quantum computing methods, and battery technologies that now underpin everyday life.
