The International Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Edinburgh is receiving £7 million per year in additional funding to expand its research workshops, collaborative groups, and knowledge exchange programmes. This matters because mathematics underpins almost every modern technology and system, yet the UK's mathematical sciences infrastructure has been underfunded relative to demand. The Centre serves as a hub where mathematicians from academia and industry tackle problems too complex for any single institution—from optimising supply chains to improving medical imaging algorithms. Much of this work is fundamental science: researchers explore abstract structures and proofs without knowing exactly what applications will emerge. Past investments in similar fundamental mathematics have led to breakthroughs in cryptography, weather forecasting, and internet search algorithms.
