NQCC Industrial DLA Account - University of Warwick 2025

The University of Warwick is training the next generation of quantum computing specialists through a new doctoral training account linked to the National Quantum Computing Centre. Quantum computers promise to solve problems that are impossible for today’s machines, but the field faces a severe shortage of skilled researchers and engineers. This grant funds PhD students who will work on the fundamental science and engineering needed to build practical quantum computers. The training covers hardware, software, and the theoretical foundations of quantum information. If successful, this programme will produce dozens of highly trained quantum scientists and engineers over several years. These graduates will go into academia, startups, and established companies working on quantum technologies. Their work could eventually improve drug discovery, materials design, cryptography, and optimisation problems in logistics and finance. More immediately, the programme strengthens the UK’s quantum research base and helps ensure the country has the workforce needed to compete in a strategically important technology sector. This is primarily a skills and training investment rather than a specific research project with a defined technical outcome. The impact comes from the people it produces, not a single discovery.
