This grant funds a network of doctoral training centres across UK universities, not a single research project. The problem it addresses is straightforward: the UK needs a steady pipeline of skilled researchers trained in the social sciences, but the cost and complexity of delivering high-quality PhD programmes varies widely between institutions. Without coordinated funding, smaller universities struggle to offer the breadth of training that larger ones can, creating gaps in national research capacity. If the training partnerships succeed, the impact is structural rather than visible. More PhD students will graduate with the skills needed for academic careers, policy analysis, or data-intensive roles in government and business. The centres also standardise training quality, so a doctorate from a smaller university carries the same weight as one from a large research-intensive institution. This is primarily a capacity-building grant, not a discovery project. It does not aim to produce a specific breakthrough. Instead, it sustains the fundamental science infrastructure that makes breakthroughs possible. Without such training programmes, the UK would lose the next generation of researchers who might, years from now, solve problems no one has yet identified.
