This grant funds a network of doctoral training centres across UK universities, not a single research project with a defined scientific question. The problem it addresses is straightforward: the UK needs a steady pipeline of skilled social scientists who can tackle complex real-world problems—from economic inequality to public health to digital society. Without coordinated funding for postgraduate training, individual universities struggle to provide the breadth of expertise, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and industry connections that high-quality doctoral education demands. If the training centres succeed, they will produce cohorts of researchers equipped to work across academia, government, and business. The impact is indirect but structural: better-trained social scientists mean more rigorous evidence for policy decisions, more innovative approaches to public services, and a workforce that can analyse everything from census data to consumer behaviour with genuine sophistication. This is fundamentally a capacity-building investment. It does not aim to produce a specific breakthrough or technology.
