Soc-B (Social-Biological) Centre for Doctoral Training: UCL-Manchester-Essex Consortium

The Soc-B Centre for Doctoral Training will train a new generation of PhD students to combine social and biological sciences in a single research career. This matters because many of the biggest health challenges—obesity, mental illness, ageing—cannot be understood through biology or social science alone. A person’s genes, their neighbourhood, their income, and their stress levels all interact. Yet most researchers are trained in only one discipline, leaving a gap in the skills needed to study these interactions properly. The centre addresses that gap by creating a structured training programme that gives students fluency in both worlds. If this succeeds, the UK will produce researchers who can ask questions that neither field can answer alone—for example, how social inequality gets “under the skin” to affect physical health. These graduates will go into universities, government agencies, and public health bodies, bringing a combined perspective to policy decisions on health, welfare, and inequality. The project is fundamentally an education initiative: its primary output is skilled people, not immediate discoveries. But over time, those people will produce the research that connects social conditions to biological outcomes in ways that could reshape public health strategy.
