Soc-B (Social-Biological) Centre for Doctoral Training: UCL-Manchester-Essex Consortium

The Soc-B Centre for Doctoral Training funds PhD students to investigate how social and biological factors combine to shape human health across a lifetime. This matters because health outcomes are rarely purely social or purely biological. Poverty, stress, education, and neighbourhood conditions interact with genetics, hormones, and immune function in ways that standard research disciplines struggle to capture. Most researchers are trained in either social science or bioscience, not both. This leaves a gap in understanding how, for example, chronic stress from low income alters immune system ageing, or how social support buffers biological responses to illness. If the training succeeds, a new generation of researchers will emerge who can design studies and analyse data that bridge these fields. This could eventually change how public health interventions are designed—moving beyond treating symptoms or changing individual behaviour to addressing the biological pathways through which social conditions get "under the skin." The work is primarily about building research capacity and fundamental understanding, not delivering immediate practical tools. Similar cross-disciplinary training programmes in the past have produced unexpected insights into how early-life adversity affects lifelong cardiovascular risk and how social networks influence obesity spread.
