The UK's Economic and Social Research Council is handing its research institutions a pot of flexible cash—called an Institutional Impact Award—to spend however they see fit on turning academic findings into real-world change. This matters because the gap between a published paper and a practical solution is often wide and unpredictable. Traditional grants lock money into specific projects years in advance, leaving no room to seize unexpected opportunities—a sudden policy window, a new industry partner, or a crisis that demands rapid evidence. IAAs give universities the agility to act on those moments as they arise. If the approach works, the impact could ripple across public services, local economies, and government policy. A university might use the money to help a council redesign a social care system, to spin out a startup from a sociology study, or to brief ministers on housing policy within weeks of new data emerging. The funding is deliberately open-ended, so the specific outcomes will vary by institution and opportunity. This is not fundamental science. It is a funding mechanism designed to accelerate the journey from research to impact—whatever form that impact takes.
