ESRC is handing institutions a flexible pot of money to turn academic research into real-world change, without the usual bureaucratic delays. This matters because research impact rarely follows a neat, predictable path. A discovery about social behaviour might become useful only when a government department suddenly needs that insight, or a new technology might find an unexpected application in a local community project. Standard grant funding is often too rigid to seize these fleeting opportunities. The IAA programme fills that gap by giving universities the agility to act fast when such moments arise. If the system works, the result is research that actually leaves the lab or library. A sociologist’s findings could shape a council’s homelessness policy within months rather than years. An economist’s model could inform a business’s hiring strategy. A data scientist’s tool could improve how a charity allocates resources. These are not headline-grabbing breakthroughs—they are quiet improvements to the infrastructure of public policy, local services, and community decision-making. The IAA does not create the research itself; it creates the conditions for that research to matter.
