The UK's Economic and Social Research Council is handing money to universities with instructions to spend it however they see fit, as long as it gets research out of the lab and into the world. This funding, called an Impact Acceleration Account, exists because the path from a research finding to a real-world change is rarely predictable. A discovery about consumer behaviour might improve a public health campaign, or a new understanding of how communities organise could reshape a local government service. But these connections often require unplanned conversations, pilot projects, or quick experiments that standard grant budgets cannot accommodate. The IAA gives universities the flexibility to act on those opportunities as they arise, rather than waiting years for a new grant cycle. If the approach works, it could make the UK's social science and arts research more responsive to the problems society actually faces. The impact is not on a specific product or industry, but on the speed and creativity with which academic knowledge can be turned into practical change. The research itself is whatever the university decides to pursue—the value is in the agility to pursue it.
