The UK's Economic and Social Research Council is handing its funded universities a pot of flexible cash—Institutional Impact Accounts—to spend however they see fit on turning research into real-world change. This matters because research findings often sit in academic journals for years before anyone outside a university uses them. The gap between a discovery and its application is not just slow—it is expensive and wasteful. Standard grants are rigid: they fund a specific plan written years in advance. But opportunities to make an impact—a government policy review, a company wanting to collaborate, a sudden public debate—do not wait for the next funding round. IAAs give universities the agility to act on those moments as they happen. If this works, the impact is not a single breakthrough but a faster, more responsive pipeline from social science to society. A university could fund a rapid evidence briefing for a minister drafting new legislation, or seed a partnership with a local authority testing a new approach to homelessness, or help a researcher seconded to a charity redesign a service. The money adds value to existing research by catching opportunities that fixed-term grants miss.
