ESRC has awarded institutional funding—called an Impact Acceleration Account—to help universities turn their research into real-world change faster and more flexibly than standard grants allow. The problem this addresses is a persistent gap between academic discovery and practical use. Even promising research often stalls because traditional funding is too rigid, too slow, or too narrowly focused to seize unexpected opportunities—a sudden policy window, an industry partnership, or a public health need. IAAs give universities the agility to act on those moments. If this succeeds, the impact will ripple across systems people rarely think about: public services, supply chains, energy grids, and local economies. A transport study might inform a city’s congestion policy within months rather than years. A behavioural science insight could reshape how a government communicates vaccine uptake. An engineering prototype might find a commercial partner before the patent expires. This is not fundamental science. It is a mechanism—a flexible pot of money—designed to accelerate the journey from lab bench to real-world benefit. The value lies not in new knowledge, but in making existing knowledge work faster, smarter, and where it is needed most.
