UCL, Bloomsbury and East London Doctoral Training Partnership

The UK Research Councils are funding a new cohort of doctoral students through a consortium led by University College London, in partnership with Bloomsbury and East London institutions. This matters because the UK needs a steady pipeline of highly trained social scientists to address complex societal challenges—from economic inequality to public health to digital transformation. Doctoral training partnerships are the primary mechanism for producing the next generation of researchers who will work in universities, government, and industry. Without sustained investment in postgraduate training, the country risks losing its capacity to generate evidence-based policy and innovative social research. If this training succeeds, it will produce dozens of PhD graduates equipped with advanced analytical skills, interdisciplinary perspectives, and direct experience of real-world research problems. These researchers will go on to shape how we understand and respond to issues such as urban deprivation, educational attainment gaps, labour market changes, and the social impacts of artificial intelligence. The impact is not immediate or tangible—it unfolds over years as graduates enter the workforce and apply their training. This project is fundamentally about building human capital. It does not aim to produce a specific technology or policy recommendation. Rather, it sustains the research ecosystem that makes such outcomes possible.
