One in six people in the UK has an allergy, and 5.4 million people are currently receiving treatment for asthma—a condition that now costs the NHS nearly £1 billion each year and accounts for 12.7 million lost working days. This matters because the UK has one of the highest rates of asthma in young adults in Europe, and the number of children reporting asthma symptoms has risen sixfold over the past 30 years. Despite this growing burden, the fundamental mechanisms that trigger allergic reactions and drive asthma remain incompletely understood. The Centre brings together doctors and scientists to close that gap. If this research succeeds, it could change how allergy and asthma are managed at a population level. Instead of only treating symptoms after they appear, clinicians might one day prevent the allergic response from starting in the first place, or intervene early enough to stop mild asthma from becoming severe. That would reduce pressure on GP appointments, emergency hospital visits, and the NHS budget—quietly reshaping a system that millions of people rely on every day without thinking about it.
