One in six people in the UK has an allergy, and one in twelve is being treated for asthma—a condition that now costs the NHS nearly £1 billion each year and accounts for 12.7 million lost working days. This research centre brings together doctors and scientists to tackle a fundamental gap: despite the soaring numbers—childhood asthma symptoms have risen sixfold in 30 years—the underlying mechanisms that turn a harmless substance like pollen or dust into a life-threatening airway attack remain poorly understood. The UK has one of the highest rates of asthma in young adults in Europe, yet current treatments mostly manage symptoms rather than prevent or reverse the disease. If the centre succeeds, it could shift asthma and allergy care from symptom control to prevention and cure. That would mean fewer emergency hospital visits, fewer children missing school, and fewer working days lost. It could also reduce the NHS’s annual £1 billion bill. The research is fundamental science into allergic mechanisms, not a short-term product. But understanding why the immune system overreacts to everyday substances is the necessary first step toward designing therapies that stop that reaction before it starts.
