Infrastructure and Services - The UK Health Data Research Alliance and Hub Network

The UK Health Data Research Alliance is expanding its membership beyond data holders to include trade associations and other groups, aiming to reduce the variation in how health data is stored across the country. This matters because health data—from GP records to hospital scans—is currently scattered across hundreds of different systems with incompatible formats and access rules. That fragmentation makes it nearly impossible for researchers to combine datasets at scale, blocking studies that could reveal patterns in disease, treatment effectiveness, or public health risks. The Alliance, active since 2019, has brought together NHS data holders, universities, charities, and industry partners to identify and solve these common barriers. If successful, the next five years of work will build the technical and governance foundations that allow researchers to work across organisations and data sources in trustworthy ways. This is infrastructure work—quiet, unglamorous, and essential. It will not directly produce a new drug or diagnostic test, but it will enable the kind of large-scale data analysis that has been impossible until now. Better data infrastructure means researchers can ask questions that require linking millions of records, which could eventually improve how the NHS delivers care, how treatments are evaluated, and how public health decisions are made.
