Infrastructure and Services - Technology Services Ecosystem

The UK’s health data—from NHS patient records to the genetic information in UK Biobank—is scattered across separate databases that cannot currently be combined without risking patient privacy. This project brings together experts from across the UK to build new technical systems that allow researchers to analyse information held in different places while keeping individual identities private. The core problem is that strict data protection rules, while essential, have created a barrier: researchers cannot link datasets to answer questions about human health, disease, and care. For example, linking hospital treatment records with genetic data could reveal why some patients respond to a drug while others do not, but current infrastructure makes this impossible at scale. If successful, this work will directly support Health Data Research UK’s major projects and create a foundation for the wider research community. The impact is primarily on research infrastructure—the quiet, behind-the-scenes systems that determine what questions scientists can ask. Better data linkage could eventually improve medical diagnostics, treatment decisions, and public health planning, but the immediate goal is to build the technical and governance frameworks that make such discoveries possible.
