Infrastructure and Services - Capacity Building

The UK has a wealth of health data—from GP records to hospital admissions—but lacks enough skilled people to turn that data into better treatments and policies. This programme will map exactly where the workforce gaps are, then build training resources to fill them. Without people who can manage, govern, secure, and analyse health data at scale, the potential of these datasets goes unrealised. The programme targets the entire pipeline: data managers, privacy and security experts, public engagement specialists, and the researchers and policymakers who will use the data. If successful, it will create a sustainable, skilled workforce capable of extracting reliable insights from millions of patient records. That could mean faster identification of disease patterns, more efficient clinical trials, and evidence-based policy decisions that improve lifelong health. The impact is largely invisible to the public—it strengthens the infrastructure behind medical discovery rather than delivering a single breakthrough—but without it, the UK’s investment in health data will remain underused.
