Social and Environmental Determinants of Health

A single research programme will link together health records, housing data, environmental monitoring, and other sources to build detailed pictures of how where people live and what they experience shapes their health from childhood into old age. The problem is that health is influenced by a complex web of factors—air quality, green space, housing conditions, income, social connections—that are usually studied in isolation. Researchers cannot easily see how these interact over a lifetime, or where interventions might have the biggest effect. This programme tackles that gap by creating the secure data infrastructure needed to combine information from many sources while protecting individual privacy. If successful, the work could change how policymakers design services and regulations. A local authority might use the findings to decide where to plant trees or install traffic-calming measures for the greatest health benefit. A health service could target support at households where multiple risk factors cluster. The programme is not developing a single product or treatment; it is building the tools and evidence base for smarter, more equitable public health decisions. Public involvement throughout ensures the approaches reflect what people actually want and trust.
