A partnership of 14 European and 14 African countries is pooling funding to run clinical trials for diseases that disproportionately kill and disable people in sub-Saharan Africa. This matters because HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and a long list of neglected infectious diseases—from sleeping sickness to river blindness to Ebola—remain major causes of death and disability in the region, yet many of the drugs, vaccines, and diagnostics available are outdated, ineffective, or unaffordable. The partnership, called EDCTP, fills a gap by funding collaborative research that would be difficult for any single country to pursue alone. If the trials succeed, new or improved medical interventions could reach clinics and communities across sub-Saharan Africa. The programme supports all phases of clinical testing, from early safety trials to large-scale field validation of diagnostic tools. It also builds local capacity to run trials, so African researchers and institutions can lead future studies rather than rely on outside teams. The result would be a faster, more equitable pipeline for treatments and tests tailored to the diseases that matter most in the region.

EDCTP is a public-public partnership between countries in Europe, sub-Saharan Africa and the European Union. The countries currently participating in EDCTP as members of the EDCTP Association are: 14 European countries – Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, UK; and 14 African countries – Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Mali, Mozambique, Niger, Senegal, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia. MRC contributes annually to this funding partnership to support EDCTP research and capacity building activities. All EDCTP-funded projects are undertaken in partnership with sub-Saharan countries. EDCTP aims to support collaborative research that accelerates the clinical development of new or improved medical interventions to prevent or treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and neglected infectious diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. EDCTP includes the following neglected infectious diseases: dengue; rabies; human African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness); Leishmaniases; cysticercosis/ taeniasis; dracunculiasis (guinea-worm disease); echinococcosis; foodborne trematodiases; lymphatic filariasis; onchocerciasis (river blindness); schistosomiasis; soil-transmitted helminthiases; Buruli ulcer; leprosy (Hansen disease); trachoma; yaws; diarrhoeal infections; lower respiratory infections; as well as emerging infectious diseases of particular relevance for Africa, such as Ebola. The programme supports clinical trials and related research activities on PRDs, as well as capacity development for clinical trials and related research in sub-Saharan Africa. EDCTP2 supports all phases of clinical trials (phases I to IV) for new or improved medical interventions, as well as advanced testing and field validation of new diagnostic tools.
