Capital award for UK DRI at University of Edinburgh

In plain English

AI plain-English summary

The UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI) is expanding its Edinburgh centre, adding new laboratory and office space on the first floor of the Chancellor Building at the Edinburgh Bioquarter Campus, with full occupancy expected by October 2018. This expansion addresses a critical gap: the UK lacks a unified, large-scale research hub dedicated to understanding and treating dementia, a condition affecting nearly one million people in the UK. Currently, dementia research is fragmented across institutions, slowing progress. The new facility, backed by £2.5 million from the MRC for capital equipment and co-investment from the University of Edinburgh, will house five initial research programmes, with plans to grow significantly. If successful, this infrastructure will accelerate the discovery of fundamental biological mechanisms underlying dementia—such as protein misfolding, neuroinflammation, and synaptic failure. While no immediate clinical treatment is promised, the centre aims to forge closer collaboration across UK research efforts, cementing the nation’s world-leading position in dementia science. This is primarily a fundamental science investment: the building and equipment provide the physical platform for future breakthroughs, much as past investments in shared research facilities enabled advances in genomics and imaging that later transformed medicine.

Alongside significant co-investment from the University of Edinburgh, the expected outcome of this funding is the concluded expansion of facilities on 1st floor of the Chancellor Building at the Edinburgh Bioquarter Campus, to house a larger centre. Full occupancy is expected by October 2018.. Additionally, £2.5m for procurement of capital equipment is being provided to assist the UK DRI in implementing its first scientific programmes (funding provided separately). Together, the building and equipment will provide the location for, in the initial stages of 5 programmes initially, to grow significantly in number in subsequent years. The UK DRI as a whole will help to cement the UK’s world-leading position by also promoting innovate approaches and forging much closer collaboration and integration of on-going UK research efforts. The new institute has been established to lead the UK’s dementia research effort and forms a core part of achieving the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia 2020.
