Preparedness Platform

A new UK-wide plan called the Preparedness Platform will use advanced molecular laboratories and enhanced diagnostic surveillance to spot emerging viral threats before they become outbreaks. The problem is straightforward: humans are increasingly contacting animals that carry new viruses, driven by changes in how we live and interact with the environment. The UK faces a rising risk of outbreaks that can cause serious harm. Current monitoring systems are not fast or flexible enough to catch these threats early. The Preparedness Platform, created by a team at the CVR with partners in the UK and key global centres, aims to close that gap by deploying new technologies for environmental monitoring and rapid response. If the platform succeeds, it could transform how the UK detects and contains viral threats before they spiral into epidemics. The team has already adapted its research to respond to COVID, mpox, and a recent outbreak of hepatitis in children. This work would build on that experience, making diagnostic surveillance a permanent, proactive part of public health infrastructure rather than a reactive scramble. The impact would be felt most in the quiet systems that keep society running—healthcare capacity, supply chains, and border controls—by giving them earlier warning and more time to prepare.
