National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA)

Newcastle upon Tyne will host a single centre where biologists, engineers, social scientists, and industry partners work side-by-side to turn research on ageing into products that keep people healthier for longer. Ageing populations strain healthcare systems and economies, yet most products designed for older adults fail because they are developed without input from the people who will use them or the scientists who understand the underlying biology. The National Innovation Centre for Ageing (NICA) aims to close that gap by creating a permanent hub where fundamental ageing research—from cellular senescence to social behaviour—meets product design, clinical testing, and commercial scale-up. If NICA succeeds, the result will be a steady pipeline of evidence-based products: assistive technologies, home adaptations, diagnostic tools, and pharmaceuticals that have been tested on real older populations and approved by regulators. The centre will also train a new generation of researchers who can move fluently between lab bench and boardroom. Because the work is applied from the start, the impact will be tangible—fewer falls, longer independent living, and lower NHS costs—rather than a distant promise from basic science.
