Centre for Doctoral Training for Data, Risk and Environmental Analytical Methods (DREAM)

The DREAM Centre for Doctoral Training will train a new generation of PhD students to combine data science, risk analysis, and environmental measurement methods. This matters because environmental challenges—from flooding and pollution to biodiversity loss—generate vast amounts of data, but the skills to analyse that data effectively are in short supply. Traditional training often separates statistics, computing, and environmental science, leaving graduates unable to tackle problems that cross these boundaries. The centre fills a gap by embedding quantitative methods directly into environmental research training. If successful, DREAM will produce researchers who can turn complex environmental data into actionable insights. This could improve how we predict flood risks, monitor air quality, or manage water resources—systems that quietly underpin public safety and economic stability. It may also strengthen the UK’s capacity to respond to environmental emergencies by ensuring decision-makers have access to robust analysis. The project is primarily a skills and education initiative rather than a single research programme. Its impact will unfold over decades, as trained graduates move into academia, government, and industry, bringing interdisciplinary expertise to problems that resist simple solutions.
