Future Fibres Networking Grant

The fashion and textile industry is embedding environmental scientists directly into its design and production decisions, rather than treating sustainability as an afterthought. This matters because the sector currently operates in disciplinary silos—environmental scientists, designers, engineers, and humanities scholars rarely work together. That fragmentation makes it nearly impossible to tackle the full environmental footprint of clothing, from raw material extraction to disposal. The Future Fibres Network+ (FFN+) aims to break down those walls by creating a permanent, cross-sector community where environmental evidence shapes every stage of the textile lifecycle. If the network succeeds, the UK’s fashion and textile industry could shift from a linear “take-make-waste” model to a genuinely circular one. This would affect supply chains, manufacturing processes, and waste systems that most people never see—but that quietly determine how much water, energy, and chemical pollution a single T-shirt requires. The project does not promise a single breakthrough technology. Instead, it builds the collaborative infrastructure needed to generate and apply the scientific evidence that policymakers, brands, and consumers currently lack.
