STFC Oxford Physics 2018 DTP

STFC Oxford Physics is training the next generation of researchers through a Doctoral Training Partnership. This grant funds postgraduate students in physics at the University of Oxford. The problem it addresses is straightforward: advanced scientific research requires highly skilled people, and those people need structured training and financial support. Without dedicated funding for doctoral students, the pipeline of talent that feeds fundamental physics research—and the technologies that spin out from it—would dry up. The potential impact is indirect but real. Physics PhDs trained through this programme will go on to work in fields that quietly underpin modern life: satellite navigation, medical imaging, semiconductor manufacturing, and data analysis for everything from weather forecasting to financial systems. Some will remain in academia, pushing the boundaries of fundamental science. Others will move into industry, where their skills in problem-solving and quantitative reasoning improve the systems that keep society running. This is primarily a training grant for curiosity-driven fundamental science. There is no immediate practical application promised. But past investments in physics doctoral training have produced unexpected breakthroughs—from the World Wide Web, invented at CERN by physicists, to the superconducting magnets now used in MRI scanners.
