STFC Oxford Physics 2020 DTP

The UK Research Councils are funding a new wave of doctoral training partnerships, including this one at Oxford Physics, to train the next generation of scientists through structured postgraduate programmes. This grant addresses a critical gap in the UK's research pipeline: the need for highly skilled physicists who can tackle complex problems across academia and industry. Without sustained investment in doctoral training, the country risks losing its competitive edge in fields that depend on advanced physics expertise—from quantum computing to space science. If successful, this programme will produce PhD graduates equipped to work on fundamental questions about the universe, such as the nature of dark matter or the behaviour of particles at extreme energies. These are primarily curiosity-driven investigations with no immediate practical application. However, similar fundamental physics research has historically led to unexpected breakthroughs—for example, the World Wide Web emerged from particle physics at CERN, and MRI scanners rely on principles from nuclear physics. Deeper understanding of the cosmos often yields technologies that quietly underpin modern life, from satellite navigation to medical imaging. This training partnership ensures that the UK maintains the human talent needed to make such discoveries possible.
