Sonic Cosmos Context Planetarium domes are unique immersive spaces where audiences are immersed by visual and auditory media where they can, amongst a range of topics, primarily experience stories of science, nature, and the Universe. While the reliance in Planetarium productions is on visual content, we have identified that this can often exclude the visually impaired community making them an underrepresented in the planetarium experiences. To address this gap, Sonic Cosmos will redefine what it means to engage with the wonders of the Universe through sound, ensuring accessibility while maintaining a broad appeal for all audiences. The Challenge Many planetaria shows prioritise stunning visualisations, limiting their accessibility to audiences with visual impairments. The lack of inclusive programming reduces the reach of this immersive environment and overlooks the opportunity to explore alternative sensory mediums, such as sound, to tell the story of our Universe and is a challenge that we want to tackle head-on. Sonic Cosmos will transform this challenge by developing a fulldome show that prioritises auditory engagement without compromising the multisensory wonder that planetariums offer so that audiences have a shared experience. It is one that everyone in the audience will be able to connect with on an emotional level. It is said that shared experiences have a deep impact on human socialisation because they enhance each person's individual experience. Another challenge is how to make that emotional connection, how to create the perfect soundscape that will create a peak experience and be memorable. When we listen to music that we enjoy, our brains release dopamine, the chemical that produces the feeling of happiness and that is a challenge we want to address. Just think about your favourite movie and the soundtrack will come into your mind. To address this, we will work with sound experts. Aims and Objectives The primary aim of Sonic Cosmos is to create an inclusive planetarium show that offers a transformative sensory experience. Objectives are to: Develop an auditory experience that translates cosmic phenomena into soundscapes, using vibrations, rhythms, and harmonies to narrate the story of the Universe. Ensure the show remains captivating for sighted audiences by integrating sound with carefully curated visual elements and tactile experiences. To create a storytelling experience suitable for ages 8 and up that appeal to the wonder initiative and beyond. Partner with experts in astronomy, sound design, and accessibility, as well as members of the visually impaired community, to co-create an authentic and impactful experience. Make the show available to all Planetaria.
