My research focuses on how the way people move—such as walking and dancing—affects our social perceptions, shaping judgments of attractiveness, trustworthiness, and competence. Traditionally, psychological research on social perception has focused mainly on static features, such as facial appearance or body shape. However, everyday interactions involve movements that significantly influence our impressions of others. My doctoral research bridged this critical gap by using advanced motion-capture technology to precisely record and analyze how people walk and dance. This enabled the collection of detailed, high-resolution data from 100 participants performing various movements. My findings showed that dynamic cues, such as graceful dance moves or confident walking styles, significantly shape impressions about attractiveness, competence, and warmth, often even more powerfully than static physical features alone. For example, dance movements strongly increased perceptions of attractiveness, and certain walking styles enhanced impressions of warmth and competence. Additionally, my studies explored how expectations about someone's gender influenced the interpretation of their movements. The research also revealed intriguing insights into how traditional gendered movement patterns, when mixed or unexpected, could positively influence attractiveness judgments, challenging typical societal stereotypes. A key outcome from my PhD research is the creation of an extensive, publicly accessible motion-capture database, which will serve as an invaluable resource for scientists, technologists, and clinicians worldwide. This dataset will significantly enhance research across various disciplines, including psychology, artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and forensic science. For example, it could be used by forensic psychologists to better understand how movement influences eyewitness identification and perceptions of threat, potentially improving justice system practices. During this fellowship, I aim to further refine and publicly release this dataset, facilitating international collaboration and interdisciplinary research. I'll also complete and publish high-impact academic papers based on my doctoral findings, expanding their scientific influence. Additionally, I plan to conduct new, targeted research (involving no more than 25% of my fellowship time) examining specifically how movement affects perceptions in forensic contexts. The fellowship will also allow me to participate in international conferences, professional training in advanced movement analysis techniques, and specialized methods such as eye-tracking. These opportunities will strengthen my skills and professional network, supporting my goal of becoming a leading academic in social psychology and movement analysis. To ensure broader societal benefits, I will engage actively in public outreach through workshops, demonstrations, and educational activities. These will help academics, professionals, and the general public appreciate the importance of dynamic social perception. By the end of this fellowship, I will have not only consolidated my doctoral research but also made lasting contributions to science, public engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
