Vector-borne diseases, such as dengue and chikungunya, are responsible for devastating consequences. The causal viruses often spread in low- and middle-income countries, with Aedes moquitoes (which spread many vector-borne diseases) being particularly prevalent in tropical regions. Global disease prevalence has been increasing in recent decades, including outbreaks in previously unaffected locations. Factors such as urbanization, increased travel, and climate change are contributing to the growing prevalence of these diseases, highlighting the need for ongoing research and monitoring to manage and predict outbreaks effectively. This project involves the development of an Indonesia-UK vector-borne disease modelling network, with a focus on capacity building. Indonesia is a country that experiences frequent outbreaks of vector-borne disease, and the UK is a country that is expected to experience outbreaks in the coming decades. As such, researchers in the UK will benefit from the experience of Indonesian researchers at living with and managing vector-borne disease, and researchers in Indonesia will benefit from the infectious disease modelling expertise in the UK. Specific topics for joint study include: i) Identifying patterns of virus transmission in different regions in Indonesia; ii) Examining the impact of different virus strains; iii) Modelling the interaction between environmental factors and mosquito population dynamics; and iv) Outbreak forecasting. Discussions will generate insights for disease control in Indonesia and demonstrate general principles for preventing disease in the UK. This initiative will facilitate knowledge exchange between UK and Indonesia experts, and provide learning opportunities for students in both countries.
