Edmond J Safra, Accelerating Clinical Trials in Parkinson’s Disease (EJS ACT-PD) - a Multi-arm Multi-stage Platform Trial for potential disease modifying approaches

Parkinson’s disease patients in the UK will soon be able to join a single, continuously running clinical trial that tests multiple experimental drugs at once, rather than waiting for separate studies to start one after another. This matters because Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition with no treatment that slows or stops it. Traditional clinical trials test one drug at a time, which is slow and expensive. Many promising treatments never get tested because the current system cannot keep up. The Edmond J Safra Accelerating Clinical Trials in Parkinson’s Disease (EJS ACT-PD) consortium has built a national platform trial that can evaluate several potential disease-modifying therapies simultaneously, adding or dropping drugs as results come in. If this platform succeeds, it could cut the time needed to identify effective treatments from decades to a few years. The same infrastructure could be reused for future drugs, making the entire clinical testing system for Parkinson’s faster, cheaper, and more efficient. This does not directly change a patient’s daily life tomorrow, but it could mean that a drug proven to slow disease progression reaches the clinic years sooner than it would otherwise.
