AI plain-English summary

A new injection-moulded plastic can detect touch, pressure, and speed without any embedded electronics, using only its surface texture and machine learning. This matters because current touch sensors rely on discrete electronic components layered into devices, adding weight, cost, and complexity. The material replaces multiple separate parts—sensors, wiring, circuit boards—with a single moulded surface that interprets finger movements through signal patterns generated by its own texture. For car interiors, this could mean replacing bulky clusters of buttons and touchscreens with seamless, sculpted panels that respond to touch. Fewer physical controls reduce driver distraction, while the lighter construction cuts vehicle weight and fuel use. The technology has already attracted interest from automotive suppliers Futaba and Novares, suggesting near-term industrial adoption. If successful, the approach could extend beyond cars into medical devices and consumer products, enabling thinner, cheaper, and more durable interfaces. The fundamental advance lies in proving that a uniform conductive material, shaped with precise surface engineering, can function as a sensor without embedded components—a principle that could reshape how manufacturers design human-machine interfaces across multiple sectors.

Tangi0 brings a new design approach to the growing sensors market. Our innovative touch and pressure sensing material combines patented sophisticated surface engineering and intricate signal processing and machine learning to sense touch, speed and pressure. Finger movements across the surface produce sequences of signals to describe the movement. Our injection-moulded uniform conductive material registers different signals according to specific surfacing texture properties, without integrated discrete embedded electronics. Our material will allow the design of disruptive products in different sectors, from consumer products to medical devices, and notably automotive interiors to meet car manufacturers´ demand for innovative Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI). We will enable to reduce costs, weight and improve driver safety by creating less distractions by reducing HMI clusters. Our technology has already gained the attention of relevant Tier 1 and 2 suppliers such as Futaba and Novares.
