RESEARCH QUESTION: To determine to what extent the passive strategies provided in buildings are accessible and adapted for use by older people to ensure their thermal comfort and how their proper use affects energy consumption. THE CONTEXT: Extra-care housing in the UK (older people live independently in separate apartments in such houses, but also have access to support services). AN OUTLINE OF THE KEY AIMS OF THE RESEARCH: 1) Identify which passive strategies are currently being used in buildings where older people live to improve their thermal comfort. 2) Determine how people behave and react to the deterioration of thermal comfort and how they use various passive strategies to improve it. 3) Develop a set of recommendations on the effective use of various passive strategies inbuildings for the elderly.
