In the first year, the student will undertake a systematic literature review to create a framework of influences on innovation adoption and scaling up in the water industry based on past studies and identify key research gaps. In the subsequent years, a series of case studies will be undertaken in Yorkshire Water to explore the journeys of specific innovations including the discolouration project previously developed by the industrial supervisor (Sarah Gledhill) and one of the academic supervisors (Professor Joby Boxall). The student will use a mix of interviews and group activities to test and further develop the innovation adoption framework. Multiple stakeholder perspectives will be gathered (e.g. from different parts of YW and external collaborators) in order to gain a more rounded and detailed view. Through this work we will build a rich picture of key turning points in an innovation's journey that could derail or accelerate its wider adoption. The final years of the PhD will involve the development and specification of strategies and interventions that would aid the wider innovation adoption. These could be in the form of a practical guide for water utilities and an accompanying training programme.
